This cell surface receptor is a heterodimeric protein composed of an alpha (HLA-DQA1) and beta (HLA-DQB1) subunit. HLA-DQ is expressed on antigen presenting cells such as B cells, monocytes, macrophages, dendritic cells, and activated T cells. HLA-DQ plays a role in presenting peptide antigens to CD4+ T lymphocytes. Reports indicate that certain alleles of HLA-DQ are associated with celiac disease and type I diabetes.
