Special remarks: Thge assay system is a competitive binding assay using plates which are pre-coated with 8OHdG. The monoclonal antibody is supplied in liquid form. Therefore higher concentrations of 8OHdG will result in a lower signal at the end of the assay procedure.
Salivary 8OHdG seems to be a useful marker for oxidative damage of DNA or oxydative stress in total. Oxidative stress is a major cause of endothelial dysfunction. Oxidative stress produces reactive oxygen species, mainly superoxide, and may promote endothelial dysfunction by inactivating the production of NO. Oxidative stress might play a significant role in the pathophysiologic mechanism of erectile dysfunction.
There is some evidence that the measurement of salivary 8OHdG also is a useful biomarker for predicting severe erectile dysfunction and hypogonadism.
This recently has been published by Yasuda et al in the Journal of Sexual Medicine 2008 (online publication in February 2008).
