Special remarks: Salivary Chromogranin-A (CgA) shows a distinct circadian rhythm with a morning peak upon awakening. In contrast to this the plasmatic CgA concentration does not show such a circadian pattern. This indicates that salivary and plasmatic CgA have different routes of secretion. Salivary CgA seems to be a useful marker for mental stress.
There is a lot of evidence that salivary CgA can be used as a psychological stress indicator and is an indicator reflecting sympathetic nerve activities, different from cortisol. The secretion of salivary CgA seesm to parallel the secretion of catecholamines (epinephrine and norepinephrine) in plasma. Therefore salivary CgA can be used as a surrogate marker for plasma catecholamines.
Because salivary CgA is faster acting and is more reactive than salivary cortisol, several studies have been conducted on CgA as an indicator for psychological stress.
